"Life of King Gesar"
In the 7th century, Tunmi Sangbuzha was born in the south bank of the Brahmaputra,Longzi county,the southern area of Tibet at present (is also said to be born in the Tunmi family of the Nimu County).
After Tunmi Sangbuzha grew up,when the 32nd Zanpu Songzanganbu patrolling on the army-horse,managing and planning Tubo Dynasty, realizing the ambition, expelling in calm ,conquering the ethic minorities and Qiang ,unifying the Turk again, on the one hand he made good relations with the surroundings ,such as :Nipoluo and Tang Dynasty ,on the other hand ,developed the production positively ,made every rigorous system . Due to the urgent need for inter-ethnic contact, exchanging and the development of political, economic and cultural and managing the governance, Songzanganbu deeply felt the pain of lack of characters, so in the last half of the 7th century dispatched Mitun Sangbuzha etc. 16 intelligent, handsome youths studying the Sanskrit and Indian with a lot of gold ,while the 16 young living in the cold plateau couldn’t adapt the tropical climate of Tianzhu , in which 15 died in the different country, only tMitun Sangbuzha alone and a man named Li Jing (a Brahman also translated as Li Jin, Li Jin or Li Bin) and a scholar Lare baisenge learning Sanskrit and language . During the study, Tunmi respected Buddhism, learning hard ,getting good results, so was called "Sang Buzha" (meaning talented and virtuous Tibetan, "Tunmi" is the family name).
After that time,Tunmi Sangbuzha ,enhancing the friendship of the teachers ,with the recognizing and understanding of Sanskrit, Tibetan learned something. Following Songzanganbu’ wishes ,he made Sanskrit 50 basic letters as the model, combining with the characteristics of the Tibetan language, created 30 Tibetan fundamental letters, chose four Tibetan vowels from 16 Sanskrit vowels ,and developed the Tibetan words of four vowels and 30 consonants . Rooted in the historical record,after Tunmi creating the Tibetan,namely making the Tibetan eulogy dedicate to Songzanganbu , Zanpu was very happy and appreciate it . In order to drive the subjects to learn Tibetan, Zanpu worship him as a teacher,learning the Tibetan statements and other cultures in the Maru Palace with great concentration ,having no contact with the outside world, acquiring the knowledge for 3 years in the closed door. All learned Tibetan, lotus of wisdom bloomed. In Tibetan parts of the area ,some politicians, militarists and talents proficiency in constructing appeared,such as Geer Dongzan, Geer Qingling,and Minister Nian Xisangyangdun.Later, in order to use the method and rule of Tibetan alphabet correctly , Tunmi Sangbuzha built the “Thirty Odes of Wenfa Gen ”based on ancient Indian treatise of statement, coupled with his own characteristics and methods of Tibetan,making the Tibetan people having their own words for the first time . As the books and records using the Tibetan translations constantly emerged, Tibetan history has now entered a new stage of civilization.
Tunmi Sangbuzha had not only creation and researches on Tibetan and grammar ,being unique,he was also a translator. In addition to his writing the "Thirty Odes Dealing With the Runner" ( "Grammar Thirty Odes"), "The Law of Characters Changing", "Tunmi Valley Wind Theory" (or "Grammar Gender Usage")these 8 language grammar writings, but also translated the "21 Xianmi Classics", "Baoxing Tola Ronnie ", "Ten Good Deeds Odes ", "One Hundred Thousand Odes Of Prajna", "Baoyun Ode", "Baojia Ode" these more than 20 kinds of Buddhist sutras, after that, there were not only many biblical translations becoming part of “Tripitaka Ganzhuer” , but also India,China, Nepolo, Keshimiluo, Hetian and other parts of Buddhist classics and culture treatises translated into Tibetan, digesting and fusing, and formed the well-known Tibetan culture.
Tunmi Sangbuzha is a great linguist,phonologist and translator in the early stage of Tibetan society,his name along with his monumental achievements will be immortal and forever admired for posterity.
